Countertop Compost Container

Yep, not very glamerous. It's a 'Cool Whip' container. It's been there doing the job for quite some time now. (This photo even comes complete with scraps I have laying on top as my hands were dirty and I couldn't be bothered to open the actual lid at the time...

I kept thinking I wanted to get a darling little stoneware crock, with a loose-fitting lid, to do the job and compliment it's surroundings (or at least 'blend in'), but I haven't been able to find what I was looking for. So finally, out of desperation to retire the countertop Cool Whip tub, I came up with something I had around the house. It's still 'make-shift, but better than the blue and white Kraft tub, so here's the current replacement that now sits on my counter...

I don't particularly enjoy seeing the 'compost material' in the collection bowl, so I definately wanted something opaque or solid. I need something large enoug to actually hold a fair amount of material, but not so large it overtook my counter. And I certainly wanted it to fit in with its surroundings (unlike the Cool Whip tub)- I think this bowl fits the bill just fine. If you look, you can see a little compost material already in it (some shredded paper towel I believe)- good for me. (Maybe later I'll show you the homemade compost system I have going on outside)

And this is how it usually looks sitting on my counter. I have a small lid which drops down slightly inside because even though I am in the habit of emptying it regularly- even several times throughout the day, (I have a larger bucket which sits just outside my backdoor), I don't at all enjoy looking at the 'material' (or any smell as well) while it sits waiting to be emptied, thus some kind of lid is a necessity in my books)

Stainless steel is indeed a great countertop indoor compost container because it is more stylish and safe because it doesn’t leak.
